How do Independents change politics?

Since Cathy McGowan entered federal politics in 2013, community independents have made a real difference to political outcomes in this country. History was made in 2019 when retiring independent Cathy McGowan passed the independent batten onto another community independent, Helen Haines. That same election, Zali Steggal was also elected as a community independent. In 2022, another six community independent MPs joined the cross bench and David Pocock was elected to the senate. These mighty independents have punched above their weight. Here is quick summary of their achievements since the the last Federal election:

  • The Climate Change Bill increased our national target for cutting emissions to at least 43% by 2030, and reach net zero by 2050. Independent MPs continue to push for stronger action – demanding a minimum 75% emissions reduction target by 2035.
  • The Safeguard Mechanism will require Australia’s biggest companies to reduce emissions by 5% year on year.
  • Vehicle efficiency standards will no longer see Australia used as a dumping ground for inefficient, polluting vehicles.
  • A strong and independent National Anti-Corruption Commission stands out as the biggest integrity reform in a generation.

Independents have also continued to advocate for stronger integrity reforms, including:

  • Zali Steggall’s truth in political advertising bill
  • Dr Sophie Scamps’ bill Ending Jobs for Mates
  • Dr Monique Ryan’s Clean Up Politics Bill
  • David Pocock securing a Senate inquiry into federal lobbying
  • Zoe Daniel’s constant advocacy for whistleblower protections and media freedom
  • Kylea Tink’s push for a code of conduct to cover all parliamentarians and their staff
  • Dr Helen Haines’ End Pork Barrelling Bill
  • Kate Chaney and David Pocock’s Fair and Transparent Elections Bill

These campaigns require an engaged electorate that understand the power of putting community at the heart of the political discussion. In other words- people powered politics
